DMX Sentenced To 90 Days In Prison

DMX appeared in a Phoenix court room today (January 30), where he was sentenced to 90 days in prison. The 38-year-old rapper, who is currently in the Maricopa, Arizona jail, appeared before a Maricopa, County judge in black and white pin stripes, looking noticeably heavier.

The judge sentenced DMX to three months in prison, after Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies raided his Cave Creek, Arizona home last year on suspicion of animal abuse.

Investigators found several malnourished dogs, as well as the charred remains of three others.

Also recovered were guns, ammunition and drug paraphernalia.

He was also accused of felony theft, after he gave a fake name and social security numbers to workers treating him at a Scottsdale clinic last April.

As expected, several charges against the rapper were dropped in exchange for his plea of guilty.

The rapper must also serve 18 months supervised probation. The sentencing marks the end of almost a full year of warrants, raids and multiple arrests.

He was eventually apprehended December 9 in the Miami mansion of producer Scott Storch.

Since his incarceration, DMX has been reading the bible each day and is planning a religious themed television show to teach children a positive message.

Ludacris Launches 'Teen Service Announcement', Encourages HIV Testing

With a new “Teen Service Announcement,” multi-platinum rapper Ludacris has become one of the first celebrities to show support for Best Buy’s new teen-led social change platform, @15. The new spot debuted online January 28 at www.at15.org.

The @15 platform was devised by Best Buy to give teens a voice while giving the company insight to the issues that matter to its future customers and employees.

As such, TSAs allow the organizations target audience to hear messages of hope and encouragement from both their peers and “former teens.”

“We all make mistakes, but you have to learn from your mistakes,” Ludacris shared in his video. “Try not to make the same mistakes twice in life. We’ve all been through some bad situations and you learn from them and you become a better person because of it. Adversity can make you a stronger person.”

Best Buy plans on using social networking sites like FaceBook and Twitter, as well as YouTube, to engage teens into social responsibility through the testimony of celebrities, musicians and their peers.

The company has also enlisted several other charitable and educational organizations to inform the future leaders of the world, while providing them with a variety of options on how to effect change in their communities.

One of Best Buy’s primary partners in the program is Youth Venture, a global non-profit which helps the youth design and launch their own social initiative by providing them with tools, guidance, training and funding.

In related news, Ludacris will join several celebrities, scholars and politicians, including Master P, actor Idris Elba, and talk show host Tavis Smiley as a spokesperson for this year’s National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

Recognized each year on February 7, NBHAAD is used as an opportunity to encourage African Americans across the country to get educated, tested, treated and involved with HIV/AIDS.

This year, the initiative will include press conferences, community forums, church services, and community rallies, as well as free HIV/AIDS testing, counseling and referrals in the neighborhoods where it is most needed.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Steven Davis, a lead sponsor and member of the NBHAAD Strategic Leadership Council, HIV and AIDS have affected African Americans more severely than any other racial or ethnic group in the United States.

While African Americans account for about 13% of the U.S. population, Blacks in America account for 49% of the people who get HIV and AIDs.

African Americans also demonstrate shorter survival times and high death rates than other ethnic groups.

The disease remains the leading cause of death for African Americans and other Blacks, according to the CDC.

Other celebs involved with the NBHAAD movement include former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy; actors Hill Harper, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Taraji P. Henson; Bishop Eddie Long; General Colin Powell; talk show host Tom Joyner; and U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

Ron Browz Hits #1 For First Time; Headlines Apollo Celebration

The week is only halfway over, but it's already been a big one career-wise for rapper/producer Ron Browz. The latest artist to find success with the autotune phenomenon, Browz has topped a Billboard chart for the first time in his career as a rapper.

"Pop Champagne," the infectious urban-pop hit that is set to appear on both Browz' Ether Boy/Universal Motown debut, and Jim Jones' Columbia Records debut Pray IV Reign, entered the #1 position on Billboard's Urban Mainstream chart.

The song, released September 4, has also charted at the #3 position on the Top 40 Rhythm Monitor, which, like the Urban Mainstream chart, monitors a song's success at radio.

In addition, the Juelz Santana-assisted "Champagne" is currently #3 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart, the #4 Hot Hip-Hop/R&B Song, and #11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

To top off his success on the charts, Browz, a Harlem native, has been selected as the feature performer to lead the 75th Anniversary celebration of the Apollo Theater's Amateur Night.

Tickets for the event, set to take place tonight (January 28) went on sale Tuesday (January 27), with the first 75 tickets sold for $7.50.

Despite being a segregated venue when it was first opened in 1914, the Apollo Theater grew to become an important part of urban music history.

One of the first winners of the 'Amateur Nite Hour' competition when it started as a radio show in 1934 was none other than Jazz great Ella Fitzgerald, who was 17 at the time.

Since then, the Amateur Night competition has seen artists from Stevie Wonder to the late James Brown to the Jackson 5, Luther Vandross, Lauryn Hill and many more testing their skills in front of a live audience, to varying degrees of success.

The 75th Anniversary celebration will continue with a year-long series of exhibits, open houses, special events and performances.

In April 2010, The Smithsonian Institute will collaborate with the Apollo to kick-off a touring exhibition titled "Jazz, Jump and Jive: The Apollo Theater and American Entertainment."

Bun-B Explains Plans for Final UGK Album

Almost 2 years after his untimely death, Pimp C will receive a musical sendoff via the release of UGK's final studio album. Entitled UGK 4 Life, surviving member Bun B is crafting the LP as a work that culminates not only UGK's 20 plus year history, but also the life of Chad Butler, known to fans worldwide as Pimp C.

"The new UGK album 4 Life is the final studio album from my late great brother Chad Butler aka Pimp C and myself," Bun said in a statement. "It is my sincere hope that it's a fitting bookend to the legacy of UGK and to the life and times of Pimp C."

UGK first appeared on the national scene with the 1988 EP The Southern Way.

The duo went on to have one of the most consistent careers in Hip-Hop with five well received albums: Too Hard to Swallow, Super Tight, Ridin' Dirty (Gold), Dirty Money, and Underground Kingz (Gold).

Their last album was the group's first #1 LP, courtesy of the Grammy-nominated, Outkast collaboration "International Player's Anthem (I Choose You)."

According to Bun, the new album will be a fusion of the signature UGK sound they've cultivated over the last 2 decades.

"UGK 4 Life is an album for the people," Bun declared. "For all those people who have been with us from the beginning to those we've gained along the way, family, and friends, the street cats and the squares, the supporters as well as the detractors."

Jive Records has targeted UGK 4 Life to be released in Spring 2009.
